What actually makes a good mobile RPG
I've deleted more mobile RPGs than I can count, usually within the first hour. Over time a pattern emerged in the ones that survive on my phone, and it's rarely about graphics.
The first thing is respect for short sessions. A good mobile RPG lets me save mid-battle and pick up exactly where I left off. If quitting the app means losing progress, it's gone by the end of the week no matter how pretty it is.
The second is a progression curve that doesn't lean on grind to hide a thin story. The best ones, like Ashen Vow Chronicles, give you meaningful choices about how to build your party instead of just bigger numbers. When leveling feels like expression rather than a chore, I stay.
Finally, writing matters more than people admit. I'll forgive simple combat if the characters make me care. A little humor, a plot that doesn't insult me, a villain with an actual reason — those are what keep me tapping through the next chapter.
