Strategy games that don't fight your thumbs

Strategy is my favorite genre and also the one that translates worst to touchscreens. Tiny units, precise clicks, and dense menus were built for a mouse, and too many ports just shrink everything and hope for the best.

The games that work rethink the input entirely. Tideborne Command lets you pause and issue orders, so you're never fighting the clock and your fat thumbs at the same time. That single design choice makes it playable on a couch in a way that most RTS ports aren't.

Another trick is fewer, more meaningful units. When every ship or squad matters, you don't need to select twelve of them at once, and the whole thing stays readable on a small screen.

If a strategy game respects the fact that you're playing on a phone, not pretending you have a keyboard, it can be just as satisfying as the desktop stuff. The genre isn't the problem — lazy interfaces are.
